About 10 years ago, when I decided to explore spirituality and metaphysics more deeply, I discovered an entire world of eccentric new age beliefs and practices that just seemed, well, really crazy! I was already somewhat undecided on what I thought of channeling, but then there were also things like re-birthing, angel readings, spirit guides, iris readings, aliens! There were so many things that seemed so “out there” that I got lost trying to figure out what was true or not. It was all too much.
Since then I’ve lightened up and have developed a better understanding of how to figure out which beliefs resonate with me. This doesn’t just apply to metaphysics and new age stuff, but also spiritual beliefs as well as beliefs on life in general! Here are some things to think about when trying to decide if something is right for you:
- Does an idea or belief spark something in you? Does something “light up” inside you when you read or hear about it? If so then most likely your gut instinct is telling you to follow it.
- Do you somehow keep gravitating toward a belief over and over again? Then it might be a sign that your true spirit is connected with that idea.
- Does something that once made no sense to you (or perhaps even offended you) now make sense and resonate with you? Sometimes we are introduced to a concept before we are open enough to accept it, and then later come back when we are ready.
- Do you notice a particular concept overlapping between different ideas, authors, books, etc? The message might not be exactly the same, but the overall concept will keep coming across. If this happens, then maybe it’s time to explore that concept further.
In addition, here are some other things to think about when processing a new idea or belief:
- Don’t look at things as being right or wrong, but rather look at things as whether they can add value to your life. Does meditating about aliens on distant planets make you feel more at peace? If that’s what does it for you, then why not?
Does attending a pagan fire circle allow more fun into your life? Then stop worrying about whether it is “right” or not. Have fun and just do it! - Don’t expect perfection. This is not a perfect world and connecting with the divine oneness of the universe is not an easy task! People will make mistakes, spiritual organizations will disagree with each other, and there will be variations of beliefs within the same groups. Heck, there isn’t even a guarantee that everyone agrees within the spirit realm! Therefore, it helps to be willing to overlook the occasional flaw. Have a little patience before disregarding something as complete bunk. And on a related note…
- You don’t have to totally discard something just because it doesn’t make complete sense to you. It’s ok to keep it in the back of your mind to look at later.
- Finally, don’t take everything so seriously! Explore different ideas and beliefs. Have fun with them. Turn your analytical self off and try seeing things from your imaginative side for a little while. Who cares if reincarnation or iris readings turn out not to be true! If you don’t connect with an idea then simply move on to something else. No big deal.
Lastly, if something really makes you feel uncomfortable then stay away! Don’t let desperation for spiritual guidance allow you to blindly spend all your money or get stuck in a cult. Take control of your own choices. If you don’t feel completely comfortable with something, it is ok to walk away from it.

Oh wow!! I was just thinking of writing an article of a similar nature to yours and then I came over to your site. There is so much stuff on the web. Every so-called spiritual guru appears to be channeling. So for those of us who don’t know any better, we may just be tempted to believe in all of them. Some discernment is necessary!!
Evelyn, I would LOVE to read what you have to say about finding truth!
You are right about using discernment and it’s something I probably should have addressed more in this post. After 10 years of practicing how to “feel out” what can be trusted, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be new at this kind of thing.
This is a great and very inspirational article, thanks a lot Metaphysical Junkie!
